I have Wilms Tumor and getting treatment. I want to show people not to be scared of being treated, what to expect, my experience so far, my progress, and help others understand childhood cancer.
On October 3rd 2022 Ada was going to ballet and my I put her in her ballet leotard.
I noticed Ada’s stomach was very big on one side and I was like, what the heck?
I sent a picture to my sister who is a nurse. It was discussed that maybe since she's 4 it might be constipation. So I waited a couple of days but nothing changed.
Then two days later on October 5th I thought her tummy didn’t change size and I made an appointment for her to see her pediatrician.
On Thursday the 6th of October we went to the doctor and she felt her tummy and send us over to the hospital for an X-ray. Ada got her X-ray and we left to pick up the triplets. On our drive I received a call that she had a large mass in her abdomen and to come back for a CT scan.
We returned to the hospital for the CT they took of just her abdomen and found a soft tissue mass that measured larger than a softball.
That night we received a call from the pediatrician about the CT results and she told us that the mass was in her left kidney and that it was believed to be cancer.
Friday the 7th we received a phone call from MD Anderson pediatrics cancer unit and they told us they believe she has Wilms Tumor and that her appointment would be on Tuesday. As parents we wanted her to be seen ASAP and it was difficult to wait.
Tuesday October 10th we were at the hospital all day drawing labs, running tests, talking to the oncologist and a surgery team. We returned Thursday the 12th for another CT but of her chest, abdomen, and pelvis to see the extent of her cancer.
She was diagnosed with stage 4 because it had grown out of her kidney, in her vena cava, and had small particles in her lungs. There was an opening in the operating room and Ada had her port put in and a biopsy of her tumor removed for testing.
One week from her first visit to MD Anderson she started Chemo. She did weekly chemo for 10 weeks with ultrasounds, CT scans, and several other tests. Most weeks she tolerated Chemo well with little reactions and on occasion she felt sick and had other side effects. Her tumor has responded to treatments which is an answer to our prayers.
Here we are middle January 2023. She is scheduled to have her left kidney removed along with all of the cancer.
I will keep you posted on her surgery and recovery.
